A fifth of the population is expected to be single by 2040
Modern society is seeing a distinct rise in the single lifestyle, driven by shifting values and evolving social structures. With delayed marriages, higher divorce rates, and a growing emphasis on personal freedom, living without a partner has fast become a new norm.

How do they really feel about being single?
Core Insight
People don't always seek direct social interaction—they often seek the comfort of simply being around others.
The opportunity lies in designing spaces that encourage a quiet sense of connection without creating social pressure.

I think the best connections
often come out of nowhere.

What if we design furniture that allows singles to experience low-stakes connections with like-minded strangers, without ever forcing them to interact?
Design Principle
Passive Connection
Rather than encouraging direct interaction, Mushloom creates opportunities for subtle awareness, quiet companionship, and spontaneous connection while respecting personal space.

Introducing Mushloom
Mushloom is a social seating concept that gently encourages moments of passive connection, allowing people to share a space without the pressure to actively interact.

High-density memory foam self-adjusts to body heat and weight, contouring perfectly to the user's profile. Its signature slow-rebound property evenly distributes pressure to deliver optimal ergonomic relief.
Material & Comfort
Organic, rounded geometries create an enveloping enclosure, shielding users from distractions to foster deep relaxation and psychological safety.

Reflection
Designing for Quiet Connection
This project challenged my perception of social interaction. I learned that meaningful connection doesn't always require conversation—sometimes simply sharing the same space can create a sense of comfort, belonging, and emotional support.
Designing Presence
Rather than designing furniture as an isolated object, I explored how spatial relationships, form, and materiality can influence human behavior and gently encourage connection in public environments.
