To nurture intergenerational bonds
and mutual support
For grandparents and grandchildren
At shared domestic spaces.

A Growing Intergenerational Gap in Domestic Living
The rise of dual-income households has reduced parents’ availability for daily caregiving
while many elderly people live alone
This shift has led to grandparents increasingly taking on primary caregiving roles within the home
Understanding Both Generations
Grandparents
-
Reduce feelings of purpose loss after retirement.
-
Maintain emotional connection and daily engagement.
-
Encourage active participation within the family.
Grandchildren
-
Learn through exploration, imagination, and play.
-
Build emotional security through meaningful interactions.
-
Create lasting memories through shared experiences.

Core Insight
Grandparents and grandchildren may share the same home, but meaningful interaction does not always happen naturally.
The opportunity lies in creating playful, low-pressure moments that encourage shared experiences, emotional support, and companionship across generations.
How might we create a shared furniture piece that fosters daily interaction, emotional bonding, and mutual support
between grandparents and grandchildren in domestic spaces?

Form Exploration
Inspired by everyday furniture, we explored a wide range of forms to encourage curiosity, interaction, and emotional engagement while ensuring safety and manufacturability.

Prototype Development
Physical prototypes allowed us to evaluate scale, interaction, ergonomics, and structural feasibility while refining the playful experience between grandparents and grandchildren.
Introducing GoalGo
GoalGo transforms everyday domestic spaces into playful environments where shared activities naturally foster companionship, emotional support, and lasting memories across generations.

Indoor-Outdoor Flexibility
Light and easy to move, expanding the boundaries of family playtime from the living room to the backyard.

Reflection
Designing Through Play
This project reinforced my belief that meaningful relationships cannot be forced, but they can be gently encouraged through thoughtfully designed everyday experiences. Play became more than an activity—it became a medium for conversation, companionship, and emotional connection.
Beyond Furniture
Rather than designing a standalone piece of furniture, I explored how everyday products can become social catalysts that strengthen family relationships while seamlessly fitting into daily life.
